To sum up, the points that I would like you to pay attention to at this stage are the following:
1. Transitive or Intransitive
Can the verb have an object?
2. Preferred particle(s)
Which marker(s) can the verb have?
3. Group 1 or Group 2
What is the final vowel sound right before ます?
Please note that some books such as Genki series teach you verbs in dictionary form first rather than masu form. If you learn that way, the conjugation is reversed :)
They also call what we call Group 1 verbs U Verbs and Group 2 verbs RU Verbs.
I know this can be confusing for some of you but these are just different terminologies that they use to refer to the same thing.
(Some books like Try series call dictionary form plane form.)
Additionally, please be reminded that, in natural Japanese, verbs are placed at the end of the clause and/or the sentence, except when you modify a noun.
You are usually able to determine tense and register of the sentence by looking at the form of the verb at end of the sentence :)
